According to the U.S. Department of Energy, the typical commercial building uses 2% to 3% more energy each year after the building opens. This means that the typical 15 year old building is using 30% to 45% more energy than it did when first put into service. It should be noted, however, that it's not just buildings that use energy, people do also. And the typical person wastes 20% to 50% of the energy that they use.
There has been a push in recent years to simply improve energy efficiency. What U.S. government studies have found is that as systems, buildings, and even automobiles get more energy efficient, people use them more! During the periods of the greatest change towards energy efficiency, energy use increased as much as 10% in a single year, so we have in fact, found ways to waste energy more efficiently! So efficiency isn't the only answer to our energy waste - we need to include conservation strategies to assure that we are using the full range of available resources to attack the problem.
Practical Energy Solutions is a company based in West Chester, PA that provides consulting services for facility owners and managers to help reverse this typical trend, using a combination of both energy conservation and efficiency. By finding how and when the waste occurs, we are able to provide strategies for reducing energy consumption and costs with no capital investment.
Our system uses advanced diagnostics and software to database the performance of energy systems in a building. Working with existing energy equipment, building automation systems and building personnel, we deliver information that substantially increases the operational efficiency of buildings. We also provide education to the building occupants, to show them how they can contribute to an energy conservation and sustainability initiative.
